Fire Prevention

The Saginaw Township Fire Department Fire Prevention Bureau is supervised by the Assistant Chief of Fire Prevention and is tasked with the goals of property preservation and life safety protection through Community Risk Reduction (CRR). These goals are pursued through the plan review process, fire inspections, public safety education and fire investigations.

The plan review process requires all new construction and renovations of existing occupancies within the jurisdiction to comply with the current fire code requirements. These code requirements include proper construction design, adequate exiting, fire department access, and additional life safety features such as fire sprinkler and fire alarm systems. The plan review process is completed in conjunction with, and the cooperation of, the township building and zoning departments.

Fire inspections of all occupancies (except one- and two-family dwellings) in the township are completed on a regular, ongoing basis. The inspections are conducted to ensure that all existing occupancies are maintaining compliance with current fire code requirements.

Public fire safety education is conducted through a variety of delivery methods. A primary emphasis is concentrated on programs in the local schools, particularly young children, pre-school through second grade. Each academic year, personnel are in each classroom, every month to instruct on a variety of topics including fire, water, bike, and gun safety, poisons and home emergency preparation. Additional education is presented to the broader population through fire safety presentations, fire extinguisher training, and fire evacuation drills.

The bureau is also responsible for conducting fire investigations within the township. Fire investigations are completed to identify fire causes in an effort to prevent future fires.
