2015 Expanded Problem Waste Program

Mid Michigan Waste Authority (MMWA) announces an expanded, collaborative new Community Toxics Prevention problem wastes program to provide area residents with more opportunities to properly manage three kinds of troublesome residential wastes: household chemicals, certain electronics and unwanted medications.  This program offers a schedule of six Problem Waste Drop-Off Days across summer and fall 2015 at a permanent facility, rather than the two or three yearly events previously offered.

Drop-offs are one-stop chemical, electronics and medication recycling days, offered through a partnership between MMWA and Saginaw County Department of Public Health to conduct increased toxics reduction programming.  The Community Resource Recovery Center (CRRC/Center), built by community neighbor, MMWA, is the new permanent recovery site for residential drop-off of community toxics.

The CRRC will provide proper management of unwanted household chemicals, computers and TV’s at CRRC Problem Waste Drop-Off Days, offered throughout the summer and fall.

For safe preparation and transport of problem wastes in your vehicle, please follow these guidelines:

  • Keep chemical products in original containers whenever possible
  • Do NOT mix products together
  • Tightly seal all containers and place upright in sturdy boxes
  • Never transport leaking or open containers
  • Mark out personal information from prescription labels and place all medications together in a bag separate from any chemical and electronic items
  • Containers up to 5-gallon size will be accepted, but containers are not returned
  • Business wastes, explosives, ammunition, tires and asbestos are not accepted
In order to not overwhelm the CRRC site and staff or block the road, cars may not line up off the site onto the road.  If the line extends down the site drive to the road, do not stop.  Come back later during the drop-off day noted hours or come to a different scheduled drop-off.  Law enforcement will be at the events to ensure that cars do not line up on the road.  With six events offered this year, there are numerous opportunities for residents to drop off targeted items.  The site will be closed promptly at the noted closing time and no more cars allowed on the site.

A complete list of acceptable items and additional program information is available on the MMWA website at www.recyclemotion.org or by calling 989-781-9555.
