The Giving Spirit

This time of year it’s easy to overlook the needs that often go unanswered in our community.  We have a wealth of opportunities in Saginaw Township to partner with existing organizations and businesses who have donation programs this holiday season.  We encourage you to find a way to help those around you in need.  We have partnered with the State Street Corridor Improvement District to identify locations ready to accept and use your donations along State Street.

United Financial Credit Union on State Street is collecting items for CASA of Saginaw County.  CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) are specially trained volunteers who provide a power voice in the Saginaw County court system for children who have been removed from their home because of abuse or neglect.  They are looking for the following items, which can be delivered to the State Street office at ADDRESS:
Stocking Stuffers and small toys including board games, coloring books, crayons, markers, board books, cross word and word search books, journal books for older children, flash cards, calculators, puzzles, legos/blocks, nerf toys, girl hair accessories, small cars, dolls, balls, pull toys and action figures.

Warm clothing for boys and girls ranging from 18 months to youth size 16, including sweatshirts, sweat pants, socks, underpants, small gloves, coats, hats, scarves and pajamas.

Personal hygiene items for teens and children including soaps, shampoos, deodorants, toothpaste, diapers, etc.

Donations can be dropped off at United Financial Credit Union, 4685 State Street, during normal business hours.

Underground Railroad has two holiday giving programs for which they are seeking assistance.

Adopt a Family – Donors are anonymously matched with a family.  Underground Railroad provides the donor with the family’s wish list including the number of family members, ages, gender and size of clothing.  A typical wish list includes clothing, undergarments, bedding, bath and kitchen towels, toys, cleaning supplies and special requests of the family.  They hope to have all families adopted by December 15, 2014.

Adopt the Emergency Shelter – Help supply our emergency shelter with items needed for daily living. This includes pajamas, underwear, socks, twin size sheets, blankets, pillows, bath towels, paper and cleaning products and personal hygiene items.

If you are interested in helping please call 755-0413 ext. 1225 or email Karri at ktanney @undergroundrailroad.org.

Salvation Army – This season the Salvation Army is most in need of personal care items, including personal hygiene products, toilet paper and laundry soap.  Donations should be dropped off at the main office, at 2030 N. Carolina Street.

McDonald GMC Cadillac is a collection location for Toys for Tots.  You can bring a new, unwrapped toy to their location at 5155 State Street.

Chemical Bank - Mittens Campaign –  You can donate new and gently used mittens, gloves, hats and scarves until January 16th at all Chemical Bank locations.

Rescue Ministries is looking for winter coats, hats, gloves and boots along with gently used household furniture, linens and clothing.  These items can be dropped off behind the Rescue Ministries Thrift Store at 4510 State Street in the Green Acres Plaza.  They are also always searching for volunteers looking to help a great organization.
