Household Hazardous Waste
Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) refers to a wide variety of commonly generated household chemicals and other items that can be a problem to dispose of properly. HHW includes all types of paint, varnish, paint thinner, motor oil, antifreeze, gasoline, lawn and garden products, cleaning products, pool and hobby chemicals, aerosols, etc.
MMWA operates a drop-off program for Saginaw County residents to allow safe and proper disposal of HHW items. These one-day drop-off days are open to all Saginaw County residents free of charge, and no appointment is necessary. Several events are held annually - look in the newspaper for dates and times.
The Saginaw, Midland and Bay County Health Departments also offer some HHW programming. Events are by appointment only and limited to residents of the sponsoring county.

Fire Extinguishers:
Throwing spent or out-dated fire extinguishers in the trash poses a hazard to garbage truck personnel. The companies below provide safe disposal of extinguishers, or contact your fire department for tips.

Smoke Detectors:
Proper disposal of smoke detectors is important, as they contain a trace amount of radioactive material. There may be a small disposal fee.

Propane Tanks Refill/Disposal:
Most hardware and grocery stores, as well as some gas stations, offer propane tank refills or exchanges. A few also offer tank disposal. Look in your Yellow Pages for other locations. Call for details on disposal availability. Unless noted, refill and disposal rates are for 20 lb. tanks.
